High School Students Visit Guatemala

Some Grade 11 and 12 students at Steinbach Christian School (SCS) went to Guatemala with ChildCare International last month. They connected with sponsored children and visited the schools they have been supporting. They were moved by the extreme poverty they saw.

The students received plenty of hugs from grateful Guatemalan children.

SCS student Sonia Doerksen said it was “amazing to see people with less be happier than those with more.” “They might be in poverty material-wise, but if they have Christ, they’re so joyful, and that was so cool to see,” she told a local radio station upon her return. Read more.

Special thanks to SCS students, staff and the Steinbach community who raised over $15,000 for ChildCare International through their Famine for Faith fundraiser. It involved a 27-hour fast and a student celebration.

Vice-Principal Scott Wiebe, teacher Audrey Guenther, and SCS students presented a cheque to Renée Barclay of ChildCare International on May 14th.

Gardening For Food Security

It’s that time of year to don a pair of gardening gloves and start digging in the dirt. Here are some tips to get your green thumb going, and you can help impoverished families do the same.

Whether you’re a seasoned gardener or a beginner, you’ll need to plan what to plant and when. Use this free Garden Planning Worksheet to get ready for the season. Some other tips:

  • Location – Be mindful of areas in your yard that will get full sun or are mostly shady. Tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers and most leafy greens do best in areas with at least six hours of sun a day. Carrots and other root vegetables can thrive in shadier areas.
  • Grow a herb garden – Herbs will sprout after only a few weeks. They can also be transplanted from indoor pots once the ground stops freezing overnight. Herbs will thrive in nutrient-rich outdoor soil. They make healthy food taste sensational, and growing your own can save you money at the grocery store.
