Dominican Republic

The Dominican Republic lies on the island of Hispaniola, which it shares with Haiti. Each country is home to roughly 10M people, but their economies are strikingly different. The gap in measures of health and education is similarly large. This divergence in fortunes has many causes. Geographically, the Dominican Republic is the greener, rainier side of the island and has better farmland. Historically, France’s colonization of Haiti was much more brutal than Spain’s in the DR. These differences are among the many which have lead the Dominican Republic to become one of the more dynamic economies in Latin America and the Caribbean. However, the country remains vulnerable to natural disasters such as hurricanes and earthquakes similar to that which devastated Haiti and Puerto Rico.
